I’m just a small houseplant grower and plant pruning or not doesn’t matter to me very much. Are you still letting this wrong thinking sway you? In fact, plant pruning is critical whether you are a large outdoor garden grower or a small indoor ornamental plants grower. Because pruning plants will not only keep your babies looking good, but it will also promote them healthy growth. And please remember that you are the one who escorts their growth!
In the following content, Spider Farmer will provide you several simple ways for how to prune and cut back your plants.
What Tools You Need to Prepare for Pruning
- Pruning shears
- Kitchen scissors
- Gardening gloves
Instruction on How to Prune your Plants
Step One: Observe the Plants
The first step is, of course, to see if there are wilted or dead leaves on your plant and if it looks fuller on one side. Please remember to look carefully, as unhealthy leaves may be hidden in some inconspicuous places
Step Two: Determine Your Tools
You need to decide which tool to use based on the thickness of the branches of the plants you want to prune. For thicker branches, you need to choose professional pruning shears. For longer and slender branches, you can use kitchen shears.
Step Three: Remove Dead Matter
If you find dead leaves and stems, you need to cut them off immediately. For stems with rotten roots, please gently pull them out and be sure to let the soil dry completely before watering again. For the health of your plant tissue, wipe your sharp scissors or blades with rubbing alcohol between each cut.
Step Four: Prune back half of the longest branches
Select the stems of your houseplants and carefully cut the dominant shoots by a quarter, then cut the others in half, and the remaining selected shoots all the way back to their bases. You may be confused, but trust us, when your houseplants start to grow new leaves again, random growth patterns will fill them into beautiful shapes.
To Sum Up
If you want your beloved plants to look good and not allow them to grow beyond their space, you need to prune them regularly. When it comes to gardening, don’t worry and don’t get overwhelmed.
